Project Overview

Existing Water Tanks
Existing water tanks, 2 tanks at 10,000 each
Dhobi Dhara is a neighborhood of about 500 families just outside of the main market of Kalimpong, West Bengal, India.  Built into a hillside Dhobi Dara used to house leprosy patients but has since grown into a four to five hundred house village.  In Kalimpong every area of town has water problems.  Many have to buy their water from vendors who drive it up from the river which is a 45 minute drive away.  But in a town with serious water shortages, Dhobi Dara has one of the worst situations.

In March of 2015 Neighborhood leaders proposed the building of a larger water storage tank since the little water that comes from city springs and reservoirs spills out the top of their current tanks (two 10,000 liter tanks) and is lost.  Current water intake is more than they can hold.

In consultation with the local public health office that deals with water supply, plans for a larger water tank have been drawn up and approved.  The propose tank will triple Dhobi Dara's water storage capacity!  Now we only lack funding.  Will you give to support this project to bring water?

In Short

Problem:  Severe water shortage, and insufficient water storage capacity.

Proposed Solution:  Triple the current water storage capacity of 20,000 liters to 60,000 with a concrete water tank costing 950,000 rupees ($15,000).  Construction and materials will be sourced locally and the labor force will come from the neighbourhood supporting their economy even as we improve the water situation.
